Educational Philosophy
Could one of us adapt this from some past coursework? I know that we probably have already done this in Cahill's class or even in the first course at TWU that addresses the roles of the librarian as teacher, leader, etc.
I have one from Cahill's that we can look at: My philosophy is predicated on the belief that the school library media program:
· Supports students to become effective users of information and life-long learners.
· Encourages collaboration between the School Library Media Specialist and classroom teachers.
· Continually strives to maintain the school library media center as a facility that advocates reading for enjoyment and personal growth.
· Ensures the school library media center has a relevant, current collection of all media resources.
· Supports and endorses the Texas School Libraries Standards and Guidelines, American Library Association’s “Library Bill of Rights” and “Intellectual Freedom Statement”, and American Association of School Librarians “Standards for the 21st-Century Learner.”
Goals for the Library Program
I have done this for my school this year as an evidence-based approach that aligns with the overall school goals. I would be glad to do this part and assume that we are creating library goals that fit our pretend campus' overarching goals. (Special thanks to Kristin Shieldknight for her help in co-creating these goals for my school in our TWU School Library course with Dr. Cahill.)
Benjamin Franklin Middle School Library Mission Statement:
To ensure that all individuals are effective users of diverse ideas and information sources and to ensure that all individuals become productive and responsible citizens as well as lifelong learners in a rapidly changing, technology-based and knowledge-rich world.
Franklin MS Campus Goals:
· Increase cohesiveness · Increase technology use · Increase college readiness/awareness · Increase extra-curricular participation · Increase academic behavior ·
Franklin MS Campus-Aligned Library Goals:
Increase collaboration among teachers and media personnel.
o Obtain the curriculum sequence for each subject. o Look at 2010 disaggregated TAKS data to determine areas of needed improvement. o Meet with departments to agree on collaboratively designed lessons that reinforce previously determined weak areas in their subject as well as integrate Web 2.0 technologies and improve overall information literacy. o Attend campus literacy team and curriculum team meetings o Structure the staff duties and routine of the library media center program to best meet campus needs and goals
Increase cohesiveness among students:
o maintain an open library schedule o waive all library fines by allowing students to participate in library service and improvement projects o add furnishings that invite students to hang out o Display student photos with book reviews to promote literacy
Initiate and develop a Friends of the Library support team of parents and students
o Host a Library Volunteer Coffee o Attend and present at PTA meetings o Survey parents and students for perceived library needs o Publish a library newsletter and website o Host a spring Book Fair through Scholastic
Build a collection of print and electronic resources and provide reading support for ELL students
Help teachers/students implement Web 2.0 technologies into the lessons, assignments, and projects.
o Issue a technology interest survey to teachers. o Provide staff development activities which demonstrate how Web 2.0 technologies can be used in the classroom and how to implement them. o Provide student/parent web 2.0 training opportunities to correlate with curriculum
Promote college readiness and awareness.
o Create a collection of books, periodicals, and materials to promote college awareness and readiness; change the shelf display monthly to feature select colleges throughout the year
Start a Book Club to promote reading and as an avenue for extra-curricular involvement for those not interested in other extra-curricular activities being offered.
o Host Trade and Treats, Read-a-thon, book celebrations and events
Increase academic behavior
